"I was talking to a customer, we were discussing about a product I was trying to sell, at this point one of my managers was walking around the area. I could sense he was listening in to our conversation, he then corrected me in an undermining manner on something he thought I was explaining, however it was a different topic and the customer looked at me with confusion. I however think that my manager was trying to show his level of authority whilst customers were present, I thought this was very unprofessional and embarrassing as it threw me off my trail of thought and heavily lowered my confidence".
After analysing this situation I can understand why my brother didn't do anything about it because at the time it was in front of customer and it would've looked unprofessional for both parties to have a confrontation. But now after addressing these emotions, my brother should have not let this happen by responding immediately to this unwarranted criticism and stood up for himself, being assertive upon the situation and calmly told his manager that he was incorrect.
Being put-down in the workplace by your peers can be very strenuous on your emotions, especially when it involves different levels of authority, it is always recommended that you stand up for yourself and respond to unnecessary conflict, if you deal with the situation in a calm non-aggressive manner you will effectively feel good about it afterwards.

ReplyDeletePut downs can be a bit of a tricky one. It's difficult knowing how to handle them especially if the put down is coming from someone who is in a higher position than you are.
I think when you're in that position you should handle the situation calmly and rationally, and put your opinion across to the other person that's involved. That way it can turn into a positive outcome!

ReplyDeleteYer put downs and generaly negative comments are differcult to deal with as if the problem contiunes with out the person speaking up it can really lower your confidence with your ablitity to do your job properly! Its particularly differcult when its coming from someone of a higher position then you!
But your post has brought this issue to my attention so I'l make sure that when one of my employees has done something in-correctly I'll take this into considerancy.

Hi Josh, put downs can be very de-motivating and confidence damaging for an individual. They can also damage relationships between manager and employee. Put downs can stop staff development which ultimately is no good for the company aswell. My view is that situations like this need to be confronted but in a professional manner (not in front of customers/clients).

Interesting ideas on dealing with put-downs! I feel sorry for your brother in that situation - it can be really difficult to deal with a situation appropriately when you're under pressure like that.

Great post, really enjoyed reading it! I don't quite know what I'd do if someone put me down at work so this is very useful! Personally I think dealing with them it's best to be rational and calm! Losing your rag will never end well!
